Hi, I’m Neill Kramer and I like to build houses. For some background, this book:

first published in 1973, was a huge influence on me. Never before had I seen so many unique living structures in a single book, which embraced an idea called vernacular architecture:

Vernacular architecture is a category of architecture based on local needs, construction materials and reflecting local traditions.

I believe that houses and their settings are a defining feature of our lives. We would do well to pay attention to the details of what goes into a house and how it turns into a home.

I currently live in Port Townsend, WA and building a house on Marrowstone Island. Follow the story as it unfolds here.
